Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Portions of North Alabama Until 8:00 am Saturday

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by both NWS Huntsville and NWS Birmingham for portions of North/Central Alabama going into effect immediately and is expected to expire at 8:00 am Saturday morning. Those counties include Colbert, Cullman, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan.

Portions of Central Alabama will be put under a Winter Weather Advisory in a few minutes as well until 8:00 am Saturday.

…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 AM CST SATURDAY…

* WHAT…Freezing rain that could produce a 0.10 to 0.15 inch thick glaze of ice along a swath extending from Cullman and the Bankhead Forest northeastward to Huntsville and Winchester. A glaze of ice ranging from a trace up to one tenth of an inch will be possible elsewhere.

* WHERE…All counties in northern Alabama with the exception of Dekalb County.

* WHEN…Until 8 AM CST Saturday.

* IMPACTS…The glaze of ice resulting from freezing rain will be most notable on elevated and exposed surfaces, including bridges and overpasses. This will make for hazardous travel conditions in a few locations.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Freezing fog will also be fairly widespread across the region overnight, resulting in visibility reductions of 2 to 4 miles.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Slow down and use caution while traveling. Prepare for possible power outages.
