Conditions Deteriorating Across North and Northwest Alabama

A 20 car pileup has occurred in Morgan County along US-231. Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reports Northbound 231 is a sheet of ice and the road is closed in both directions.

Cullman County reports that roads are becoming very icy in the northwestern part of the county.

Marion County bridges are becoming ice-covered as well. It is 29F right now in Hamilton.

Temperatures in the Ice Storm Warning area are not expected to go above freezing today and ice may accumulate to between 0.25 and 0.50 inches, with some higher amounts.

Conditions will continue to deteriorate through the morning in the Ice Storm and Winter Storm Warning areas. Precipitation could change to freezing rain and sleet in the Winter Weather Advisory counties this evening.

Black ice will be a problem across the entire northern two-thirds of the state as leftover moisture freezes on roads and bridges tonight as temperatures fall to between 8F-22F.
