Midday Nowcast: Bitterly Cold, Lingering Flurries

| February 16, 2021 @ 11:33 am

Snow flurries and showers have been ongoing through the morning hours, providing plenty of excitement, but most of this activity is winding down, but it remains bitterly cold across the state today.

Temperatures are struggling to climb out of the 20s and above freezing in many locations, and add in those winds, wind chills will remain well below freezing all day. We will see some sunshine this afternoon, but despite the sun, it remains very cold.

Tonight will be another dangerously cold night, as temperatures will range from the mid-teens to lower 20s.

REST OF THIS WEEK: Clouds will increase across the state tomorrow as temperatures rise into the 40s for much of North/Central Alabama, with mid and upper 50s down south. Rain will be likely tomorrow night, into part of the day Thursday as a low tracks across Alabama. At the onset of the precipitation tomorrow night, it will likely fall in the form of a wintry mix of sleet, some freezing rain, and maybe a few snow flakes over the northwest part of Alabama with some light accumulation possible depending on the surface temperatures. For the rest of the state, it will just be a cold rain, with some embedded rumbles of thunder.

Also, depending how far north the warm front moves onshore, portions of the Gulf Coast and South Alabama may have to deal with strong storms, and the SPC has a risk for severe storms for tomorrow night and into Thursday down that way.

The rain and storms will end Thursday afternoon and a few snow flurries are possible on the back side of the system Thursday night, but for now no accumulation is expected. Then, on Friday, the day will be cold and dry with a clearing sky with highs struggling to reach the lower 40s, and again with brisk winds, it will be feeling colder.
