Sunday Weather Xtreme: Warm Today, Rain Tonight with Rain Chances Much of the Week

| February 28, 2021 @ 6:58 am

February is coming to an end today, and the month will go down in the record books warmer than normal with a mean temperature of 46.2F, versus a normal of 43.7F. We are finishing with 6 consecutive days of temperatures of 70F or higher, offsetting the mid-month cold snap. 3.77 inches of rain has fallen in the month, which is 0.59 inches below normal. Year to date, we are at 9.20 inches of rain, which is 2.38 inches below normal. We recorded a trace of snow on the 15th and dropped to or below freezing on 12 days in the month. The average number of freezing days is 9.7. Interestingly enough, fog occurred on 14 days, with dense fog on 2. Thunder was only reported on 1 day in the month, which is less than the normal 2.3. Onward to March!

LOOKING BACK AT SATURDAY: Yesterday was a warm and humid day with a good bit of cloudiness, but just enough sunshine to drive temperatures into the 70s across the area. It was 73F in Anniston, 77F at Birmingham, and 80F at Tuscaloosa.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Today will be another warm and humid day. We are starting off the lower and middle 60s again this morning. Skies are mostly cloudy, and a steady southerly wind will continue to increase moisture across the area through the day. A cold front is pushing into Arkansas this morning. That front will produce widespread rain and some thunder late this afternoon and tonight. A few storms could be strong over the Northwest corner of the state late tonight. A few showers are possible during the day, but the day should be mostly dry. There could be a few peeks of sunshine this afternoon, with highs in the upper 70s. Lows tonight will be in the middle 50s.

IN LIKE A LION: Well, perhaps an elderly, damp lion. The month of March will start tomorrow with rain across much of the area. The rain should taper from the northwest during the morning, but there will still be a few showers during the day. Highs will be limited to the 50s to lower 60s. Monday night lows will be in the 40s as the front settles over southern portions of the area.

TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Rain will become likely again as a low moves along the Gulf Coast. There could be a few rumbles of thunder, but severe weather is not expected. Highs will be in the 50s. The rain will move out by early Wednesday, with improving conditions during the day. Highs will be in the middle and upper 50s.

THURSDAY INTO THE WEEKEND: Thursday will feature a good supply of sunshine, but clouds will increase overnight ahead of our next system. A few showers could develop during the afternoon, and rain chances will increase overnight into Friday. Highs will be in the 60s both days. The weekend will feature improving conditions and slightly cooler temperatures.

RAINFALL TOTALS: 7-day rainfall totals across North and Central Alabama will be consistently in the 2-3 inch range. That’s good news given that much of the area is drier than normal with some drought creeping in over southwestern Alabama.

VOODOO TERRITORY: It looks like fair weather will prevail much of the following week. Temperatures will be above normal that week, with highs in the 70s.

BEACHCAST: A mild but unsettled week of weather is ahead for the beautiful beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida. Dense fog is shrouding the beaches this morning, however, and will again tonight. Rain is likely Monday and Tuesday, with improving conditions on Wednesday and fair skies on Thursday. Rain returns to the forecast Friday and Saturday. Water temperatures are in the upper 50s. The rip current risk will be moderate all week.

ON THIS DATE IN 2011: A nasty line of thunderstorms produced at least four tornadoes across Central Alabama. The strongest tornado was an EF1 that cut a path over four miles long near the Lowndes County town of Tyson. The line of storms produced quite a bit of hail in the Birmingham area.
