Despite the morning chill, we expect a nice warm-up today with sunshine in full supply… the high this afternoon will be close to 70. The weather stays dry tomorrow with a high between 65 and 70, but clouds will increase by afternoon ahead of a disturbance that might squeeze out a sprinkle or two tomorrow night. The air will be very dry, and most places won’t see a drop, however.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be partly sunny and cooler with a high around 60 degrees. Then on Sunday look for sunshine in full supply with a high in the low 60s.

NEXT WEEK: A strong upper high over the Gulf of Mexico will keep most of the big rain producing systems west and north of Alabama through the week. The weather looks generally dry, with a high in the upper 60s Monday, around 70 Tuesday, and then in the low to mid 70s Wednesday through Friday. Still no sign of any major rain event for for at least the next seven days, which is fairly unusual for March since this is our wettest month of the year. The average rain for March at Birmingham is 5.23″. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1899: Cyclone Mahina, aka “The Bathurst Bay Hurricane” in Australia, was credited with having produced the highest storm surge on record in the world. The cyclone, with an estimated central pressure of 911 millibars or 26.90 inches of mercury, caused a 42.6-foot surge when it came ashore on the coast of northern Australia. The storm killed as many as 400 people and is currently Australia’s deadliest cyclone.
