Warm, Mostly Dry Through Sunday
DRY MARCH PATTERN CONTINUES: An upper ridge across the region will keep most of Alabama dry through the rest of the week with partly sunny, warm days and fair nights. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s today and tomorrow, and close to 80 degrees Friday afternoon. A few isolated showers are possible over the far northern part of the state Friday afternoon, but even there most places will stay dry.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: While a major storm system develops west of the state with snow for Colorado and Wyoming, and severe storms for the region from southern Kansas through Oklahoma and into North Texas, Alabama’s weather will stay quiet Saturday and Sunday. Expect a mix of sun and clouds both days with highs between 77 and 81 degrees. Showers will remain few and far between.
NEXT WEEK: Showers and storms move into Alabama Monday. For now, the overall severe weather threat looks fairly low with weakening dynamics and marginal instability values, but you always have to watch systems like this in March as they approach. The front will stall out over South Alabama Tuesday, where showers will remain possible. Another system will bring the next round of rain and storms to all of the state Wednesday, possibly into Thursday. Highs will be in the 70s Monday through Wednesday, with upper 60s Thursday and Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
ON THIS DATE IN 1986: Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes hit Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. A total of 19 tornadoes occurred. Three of the tornadoes in Indiana reached F3 intensity. A densely populated subdivision of Southeast Lexington, Kentucky, was heavily damaged by a tornado. Twenty people were injured, and 900 homes were destroyed or demolished. A very strong thunderstorm downburst hit the Cincinnati area. At the Greater Cincinnati Airport, windows were blown out of the control tower, injuring the six controllers on duty.
