A Brief Check on Our Weather Just After 7:00 pm

| May 3, 2021 @ 7:13 pm

As of 7:00 pm, much of Central Alabama is free from any rain activity at this time, but we do have a broken cluster of storms moving eastward across and just north of the I-85 corridor in south and southeastern parts of the area. A couple of these cells have become severe with the potential of large hail and damaging wind gusts.

There is plenty of instability across all of the area ranging from 1,000 J/kg in the southeastern parts of the area to over 4,000 J/kg in the western parts. These storms are riding a boundary of higher helicity values of over 200 m2/s2, which are allowing the sudden burst of energy that we have seen over the past hour or so. There are STP values up to 3.0 over portions of the southeastern parts, but bulk shear values are marginal at best to get decent enough veering for storms to rotate. Still, we cannot rule out a brief tornado until these storms finally move out of the area later tonight.

NWS Birmingham continues the Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8 pm tonight for the following counties in Central Alabama: Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah, Hale, Jefferson, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Perry, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Tallapoosa.

A Slight Risk for severe storms continue for nearly all of Central Alabama except for the extreme northern parts. A Marginal Risk continues for the northern parts of Central Alabama and for all of North Alabama.
