Periods Of Rain Today; A Few Thunderstorms

| June 2, 2021 @ 5:45 am

WET START TO THE DAY: Radar shows large areas of rain across Alabama this morning ahead of an upper trough to the west. Today will be a mostly cloudy day with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms; some of the storms across North and West Alabama this afternoon could be strong. SPC maintains a low end “marginal risk” of severe storms for areas west of a line from Huntsville to Tuscaloosa to Butler; heavier storms there could produce strong gusty winds this afternoon.

The high today will be in the 77-81 degree range; the average high for Birmingham on June 2 is 86.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: We expect pretty routine early June weather tomorrow and Friday; a partly sunny sky both days with a few random, scattered showers and thunderstorms around. Odds of any one spot getting wet tomorrow is around 40 percent, then dropping to near 25 percent Friday. Highs will be mostly in the mid 80s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Global models have trended drier air Saturday, showing lower precipitable water values. We will forecast a good supply of sunshine Saturday with only a small risk of any one spot seeing a shower… the high will be in the 87-90 degree range. Then, on Sunday, look for a partly sunny sky with a few widely scattered showers and storms by afternoon. Sunday’s high will be in the mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: For now it looks like we will deal with partly sunny, warm, humid days and the daily round of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Highs in the 80s… just what you expect in June in Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A major tornado outbreak for the east-central United States. This severe weather event spawned a total of 47 tornadoes over 9 states from New York to South Carolina and caused an estimated $42 million in damage, 80 injuries and 2 fatalities. The most violent tornado hit Frostburg, Maryland, in Allegany County, at 9:43 PM ET. Five persons were injured, and $5 million in property damage was reported. It was the first F4 tornado to have hit the state of Maryland since the National Weather Service began keeping records in 1950.
