Midday Nowcast: More Heavy Rain with Some Flash Flooding Concerns

| June 11, 2021 @ 11:13 am

Another muggy day with a mix of sun and clouds, and more scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms covering the Alabama landscape. Like we have seen every day this week, tropical downpours and frequent lightning are common, and some areas of localized flash flooding remain possible through the afternoon and evening hours. Many locations will see rain today, but many will not.

RADAR CHECK: At the midday hours, areas of rain and storms are ongoing across Alabama, with very heavy rainfall in West-Central Alabama, and in fact Tuscaloosa County is under a flash flood warning, as much of the county has been dealing with rain for several hours.

This area of rain and storms is beginning to expand in coverage and is not impacting portions of Fayette, Jefferson, Walker, and Bibb counties. Additional flash flood warning may be needed at times this afternoon. Do not drive into flood waters, always TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!!!

WEEKEND WEATHER: Showers and storms should begin to thin out some tomorrow, becoming widely scattered, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. For Sunday, the afternoon showers and storms will be more isolated across the northern half of the state. Expect a mix of sun and clouds both day with increasing heat levels; expect a high in the upper 80s tomorrow, and we will be closer to 90° Sunday afternoon.

IN THE TROPICS: A trough of low pressure is expected to form early next week over the Bay of Campeche and the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Subsequent slow development of this system is possible as it drifts northwestward to northward. Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent.

The global models are showing this feature developing into a tropical depression or storm in the western Gulf of Mexico by the middle of next week. The general idea is for the system to bring potential for heavy rain to parts of the Texas and Louisiana coast by the end of next week, but it is simply too early to be specific.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 119.1F at Nokkundi, Pakistan. The lowest observation was -102.5F at Concordia, Antarctica.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 116F at Rio Grande Village, TX. The lowest observation was 13F at Bodie State Park, CA.

WEATHER ON THIS DATE IN 1877: The temperature at Los Angeles, CA, reached 112 degrees during a heatwave. It would have been the all-time record for Los Angeles but official records did not begin until twenty days later.
