Severe Threat Waning…But Lots of Lightning, Thunder, and Heavy Rain Occurring

| June 21, 2021 @ 9:54 pm

Good news late this evening: the severe weather threat across North and Central Alabama may be waning.

In fact, the National Weather Service in Birmingham has declared it is over.

Showers and thunderstorms do continue across North Central Alabama tonight. The heaviest storms extend from the Aberdeen, MS area eastward across Marion, Winston, Cullman, Walker, Blount, and Etowah Counties. Lots of lightning and thunder in those storms, along with heavy rain.

The storms are moving eastward while the line of storms is sinking southward ahead of a cold front that extends from near Huntsville to Tupelo MS back into northern Louisiana.

We have received no reports of severe weather in the past couple of hours over northern or Central Mississippi or Alabama. There haven’t been any warnings in either area as well.

Instabilities are dropping now, with CAPE values over North and Central Alabama down to less than 1,5000 joules/kg. Still supportive of thunderstorms, but no worryingly high, given that we have little to no shear.

So the threat of damaging winds may be diminishing. But we will be tracking the storms over the next several hours as they push southward. Heavy rain could cause flooding in any areas where the storms train for an extended period. There will also be lots of loud thunder and some gusty winds.

Keep your Weatheradio on overnight just in case things go wrong in terms of a rogue storm or two becoming severe, or if flooding develops.
