Midday Nowcast: Clearing Sky Through the Afternoon

| June 22, 2021 @ 11:11 am

The front continues to push down in to South Alabama, and drier air is returning to North and Central Alabama this afternoon. We are seeing a clearing sky across northern portions of the state, highs today are in the upper 70s and lower 80s. The rain and storms activity is down across South Alabama, where some strong to “marginally” severe storms will be possible this afternoon.

REST OF THIS WEEK The front will stall and wash out across southern portions fo the state the rest of this week so rain and storms will continue across the southern half of the state the rest of the week. For North/Central Alabama, we should see a mix of sun and clouds these days, with highs in the mid to upper 80s through Friday. Rain chances for our part of the state are generally less than 10%.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Moisture returns northward Friday and the weather trends wetter for the weekend as scattered to numerous showers and storms will return to the forecast for both Saturday and Sunday. Most of the activity will occur during the afternoon and evening hours. The days will be partly sunny, while nights will be mostly fair. Highs this weekend will continue to hold in the mid to upper 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Not much change in the weather pattern as we head through the final days of June and head into July. The days will feature partly sunny and warm conditions with highs in the 80s, which are a few degrees below average for this time of year. Also, it will remain muggy, so during the afternoon and evening hours showers and storms will be showing up on the radar across the Alabama landscape.

IN THE TROPICS: Claudette has dissipated. Elsewhere, showers and thunderstorms have increased in coverage associated with the tropical wave located more than 500 miles east of the Windward Islands. Some additional development of this disturbance is possible over the next couple of days before upper-level winds become less conducive for further organization by Thursday. The system is expected to move westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph. Formation chance through 5 days…low…30 percent. The next name up on the list…Danny.
