Strong Storms Out There With the Potential of Gusty Winds

| July 30, 2021 @ 4:51 pm

As of 4:40 pm this afternoon, we have some isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northern half of the area (north of the I-20 corridor). Some of these storms in the northeastern corner of the area are packing quite a punch with gusty winds, very heavy rainfall, and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.

These storms are feeding off of the available instability (CAPE values are in excess of 4500-5000 J/kg), and couple that with dry air aloft, these storms will have the potential to product gusty downdraft winds up to and possible reaching severe criteria (58 mph). That was the case earlier with the storm that affected portions of Dekalb, Jackson, and Marshall counties. One cell that needs watching is the one located over portions of Fayette County. All of this activity is moving to the southeast around 20 MPH.

South of 1-20, you remain dry and very hot. The Heat advisory continues for all of Central Alabama through the rest of today and is set to expire at 7 pm Saturday evening. The central and eastern parts of North Alabama is under a Heat Advisory through 7 pm this evening, and all of North Alabama will be under a Heat Advisory starting at 10 am Saturday morning and is set to expire at 7 pm Friday evening. An Excessive Heat Warning continues for the western parts of North Alabama until 7 pm this evening.
