A Few Showers Out There at Midday; A Few Strong Storms Possible Later Today

Other than a few showers showing up over the western and southwestern portions of Central Alabama, radar is free and clear of showers and thunderstorms as of 12:10 pm. However, we are expecting scattered to numerous storms to form as we get further into the afternoon and into the early evening hours, some of which may pack a punch. Temperatures as of the 12 pm roundup were in the upper 80s to the mid 90s already. Troy was the hot spot at 95º (heat index of 107º) while the cool spot was Gadsden at 87º (heat index of 101º). Birmingham was at 89º (heat index of 100º).

The forecast hasn’t changed for today… Convective development is likely across Central Alabama during the main heating of the day today due to what boundaries were left over from Friday night’s storms and the approaching cold front. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms can be expected, some of which may be strong to marginally severe, with gusty winds being the main threat. Highs will be in the mid to upper 90s. Heat index values will be at or above 105º across the area, and a Heat Advisory will be in effect for today and for Sunday. Showers and storms will dissipate during the evening and late night hours tonight, but a few clouds and patchy dense fog will remain overnight. Lows will be in the mid to upper 70s.

As troughing moves into the area, bringing the cold front along with it on Sunday, showers and storms will be likely again. Much of the activity will start in the north and will push southward throughout the afternoon. Once again, a few strong to marginally severe storms will be possible, with gusty winds being the main threat. Highs will range from the lower 90s in the north to the mid and upper 90s in the south.
