September Rain Speculation – Bronze It Is!

| September 27, 2009 @ 9:26 am | 2 Replies

September, 2009, is going in the record books as the third wettest September since 1900 – bronze! Nearly an inch of rain fell at the official recording site in Birmingham yesterday (0.91″) placing the monthly rainfall total at 10.69 inches (see table below).

But we also got a Gold since this September is the wettest without a tropical system to produce the rain.

Another interesting note is that September, 2009, also goes in the records for consecutive days with rain. We’ve had 8 back-to-back days with rain which ties many other years for 6th place.

4 6

Place Year Rain Storm Name
1 1906 13.19″ Hurricane #5 & #6
2 2004 10.96″ Ivan
3 2009 10.69″
1977 10.43″ Babe
5 1979 10.40″ Frederick
2002 9.94″
7 1951 9.74″
8 1957 9.59″
9 1988 8.57″ Florence
10 1972 8.09″

Some other monthly rainfall totals around Central Alabama include:
Tuscaloosa at 9.17″
Montgomery at 6.65″
Anniston at 4.29″
Helena at 10.37″

So with dry, cooler weather forecast through the end of the month, I think it is safe to put away any ark plans you were working on!!
