A Brief Check On Our Weather Situation at 5:30 pm

| August 30, 2021 @ 5:39 pm

RADAR CHECK AT 5:12 PM: At this point, the heaviest rainfall is occurring along the Alabama/Mississippi state line, especially in parts of Marion and Lamar counties. There is also a band of showers and storms that is producing a good bit of lightning on the eastern side of the area, mainly from Talladega to just north of Phenix City. Currently, there are no warnings in effect for Central Alabama, but the threat continues for at least the next 16-1/2 hours for locations along and west of the I-65 corridor and the next 22-1/2 hours for the eastern parts of the area.

We did have a confirmed tornado touchdown earlier today down in Pike County that was reported by the Antioch Fire Department close to County Road 3304 and US Highway 231. As of now, there were no reports of damage from that twister. There have been a few more rotational signatures in the area, but only one of those prompted the issuance of a warning for a few minutes before it dissipated, and the warning was canceled.

Along with the threat of those tropical-induced tornadoes, the threat of a few flooding issue remains, as the bulk of the rain still hasn’t really moved into the area at this point. Also, we still haven’t seen any of the higher wind gusts yet, but all of these will remain possible for the next 12-24 hours across Central Alabama from southwest to northeast. Here is the latest breakdown for Central Alabama:

The new updates are out from the Storm Prediction Center, and the Slight Risk areas for both the rest of today and for Tuesday have been slightly extended in area.

Rest of today…
• Slight Risk: along and south of a line from just north of Aliceville to Tuscaloosa to Calera to Tuskegee to Clayton.
• Marginal Risk: the rest of Central Alabama north of the slight risk area.

• Slight Risk: along and east of a line from Gadsden to Childersburg to Autaugaville.
• Marginal Risk: west from the slight risk to a line from Oneonta to Pelham to Orrville.

Timing for the threat of tornadoes…
• South of a line from Aliceville to Orrville… Now through 4 am Tuesday.
• West of a line from Blountsville to Clanton to Fort Deposit… Now through 10 am Tuesday.
• East of a line from Blountsville to Clanton to Fort Deposit… Now through 4 pm Tuesday.

With the potential for rainfall totals reaching 3-6 inches across much of the area through Tuesday evening, NWS Birmingham has a Flash Flood Watch for all Central Alabama counties from now through 7 pm Tuesday. NWS Huntsville has done the same for all the North Alabama counties, and it is set to expire at 1 am Wednesday.

With the potential for breezy conditions across the area with wind gusts reaching 25-45 MPH, NWS Birmingham has a Wind Advisory up for all Central Alabama counties through 7 pm Tuesday.

We’ll keep you posted with updates and any warnings or advisories issued.
