Noon Update: Cool Front Approaching from the Northwest

| September 5, 2021 @ 1:01 pm

Skies have been mostly sunny to occasionally partly cloudy on this first Sunday of September. But thick clouds are not far away. You can find them over much of Tennessee, ahead of a cool front. Regional radars show widespread showers and storms over western Tennessee and northeastern Arkansas, with a few showers moving across northeastern Tennessee.

Radars over South Alabama show several showers have already developed over that part of the state in the deep moisture.

Temperatures are climbing through the 80s almost everywhere across Alabama. The state’s warm spot at this writing was Mobile, where the mercury had warmed to 87. The coolest was the 78F at the Huntsville International Airport, where skies were cloudy. Highs should be mostly in the upper 80s, with a few mid-80s in cloudier locations.

There will be a few showers over Northwest Alabama, and heavier showers and storms will push into the northwestern corner of the state around sunset. The showers should mostly peter out before reaching I-59, although a few will linger into the early morning hours on Monday.

Tomorrow will dawn mostly cloudy across Central Alabama with temperatures ranging between 68-72F. It looks like the showers and storms will be mainly southeast of I-59 for your Labor Day, but don’t take that as Gospel, as it really depends on how far south the surface front pushes tonight. Highs on Monday will range between 79-84F across the area.

Some dewpoints in the 50s will sneak into the Tennessee Valley tomorrow night, allowing overnight lows to fall into the lower 60s up there. The rest of us will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

It looks like showers and storms will be more scarce on Tuesday, and we will be watching developments in the Gulf as moisture associated with Disturbance 91L comes northward. It looks like a stronger front will be making its way to Alabama by Wednesday, and the tropical moisture will be pulled northeastward into the Gulf Coast region and southern Alabama by the front’s driving trough. North and Central Alabama will see scattered showers and storms, with heavier rain over South and Southeast Alabama. It will be warm and humid.

The frontal system should drive southeast of the area by early Thursday, putting an end to the showers and storms for North and Central Alabama and setting the stage for a nice weekend with highs in the middle and upper 80s and lows in the lower 60s.
