Midday Nowcast: Very Warm Start to October

| October 1, 2021 @ 10:32 am

An almost hot start to the new month as an upper ridge will keep the state mostly dry with ample sunshine today and tomorrow. Highs will remain in the mid to upper 80s, above average for early October. Rain chances both days are generally less than 10%, meaning most places will remain dry.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: The sky will be mostly fair for the high school games tonight with temperatures falling through the 70s.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL FORECAST: JACKSONVILLE STATE AT KENNESAW STATE (2:00p CT kickoff at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, GA): Mostly sunny and warm; kickoff temperature near 86 degrees, falling into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.

AUBURN AT LSU (8:00p CT kickoff at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge): A passing shower or storm is possible during the first half, otherwise mostly fair with temperatures falling from around 80 at kickoff, into the mid-70s by the fourth quarter.

SHOWERS RETURN SUNDAY: Moisture levels rise Sunday, and we will bring in a chance of showers and thunderstorms back to the forecast during the day. Expect more clouds than sun and highs will struggle to climb out of the 70s for many locations due to the greater coverage of clouds and rain.

RACE WEEKEND: The weather will be warm and dry in Talladega today and tomorrow with highs in the 80s. Then, on Sunday, the sky will be mostly cloudy with a few passing showers likely. It won’t rain all day, but a delay is very possible during the YellaWood 500. The high Sunday will be in the upper 70s.

NEXT WEEK: An upper trough sets up over the state next week, and that means our weather will be unsettled for much of next week. Each day will feature a more clouds than sun with scattered to perhaps numerous showers and storms on a daily basis. Highs next week will range from the upper 70s to lower 80s. By the end of the week, we should see drier air return to the state.
