Late Morning Nowcast: More Rain and Storms

| October 5, 2021 @ 10:07 am

The upper-level trough continues to sit to our west and is keeping our weather wet and unsettled again today, tonight, and tomorrow with numerous showers and storms. Expect more clouds than sun with periods of rain and highs in the upper 70s.

Late morning radar update continues to show area of rain and these will continue to increase in coverage and intensity as we head through the afternoon hours once again.

Periods of heavy rainfall could lead to area of isolated flash flooding and almost all of Alabama remains under a Flash Flood Watch until at least Wednesday evening. Rainfall totals through midweek will be in the 1-4 inch range, with isolated higher amounts.

We could also see a few stronger storms this afternoon across West Alabama with gusty winds and hail due to the colder air aloft and the SPC has a “marginal risk” of severe thunderstorms defined for far West Alabama and much of North/Central Mississippi.

THURSDAY CHANGES: On Thursday, the trough will begin to lift out of the area and showers will begin to thin out as drier air begins to return to the state. Thursday’s highs will be in the upper 70s with a mix of sun and clouds.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Dry air returns to the state and we expect a mostly sunny sky Friday, with highs in the low 80s. Mainly sunny weather will persist both Saturday and Sunday with lows 80s Saturday, followed by mid 80s Sunday. Lows will be in the 60s.

NEXT WEEK: New model data suggests enough moisture could return for a few isolated showers during the first half of the week, but an upper ridge will be in place and any rain should be light and very spotty. Temperatures will be above average next week with highs between 80 and 85 degrees

IN THE TROPICS: The National Hurricane Center has issued the last advisory on Post-Tropical Cyclone Sam, located over the far North Atlantic.

Elsewhere, a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms is located east of a surface trough that extends from the central and southeastern Bahamas northward over the adjacent southwestern Atlantic waters. Upper-level winds are not expected to be favorable for significant tropical development of this system while it moves slowly northwestward over the next several days. By this weekend, the system is forecast to interact with a front near the coast of the southeastern United States. Formation chance through 5 days…low…10 percent.
