Midday Nowcast: Finally Drying Out

DRY AND UNSEASONABLY WARM: An upper ridge is building in over the Southeast as the upper trough, responsible for all the rain this week, pulls away. Today through Sunday expect sunny, warm days and clear, fair nights. Highs today will be in the lower 80s, followed by mid 80s tomorrow and Sunday. Morning lows will be in the 50s and 60s.

Late this morning, most of the state is seeing ample sunshine, and the clouds left in East Alabama will quick give way to sunshine there as well.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Look for a clear sky for the high school games tonight with temperatures falling through the 70s.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: GEORGIA AT AUBURN (2:30p CT kickoff at Jordan-Hare Stadium): It will be a sunny, warm afternoon in East Alabama; expect a kickoff temperature near 84 degrees, falling into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.

FAU AT UAB (2:30p CT kickoff at Protective Stadium in Birmingham): Sunny and warm; 84 degrees at kickoff… about 76 by the final whistle.

SFA AT JACKSONVILLE STATE (3:00p CT kickoff at Burgess-Snow Field): Sunny and warm with 84 degrees at kickoff, mid 70s by the fourth quarter.

SOUTH ALABAMA AT TEXAS STATE (6:00p CT kickoff in San Marcos, Texas): The sky will be clear…temperatures fall from about 88 at kickoff to near 76 by the final whistle.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN AT TROY (6:00p CT kickoff at Veterans Memorial Stadium): The sky will be clear with temperatures falling from 80 degrees at kickoff, into the low 70s by the fourth quarter.

ALABAMA AT TEXAS A&M (7:00p CT kickoff at Kyle Field in College Station): Expect a clear sky with temperatures falling from 85 at kickoff, into the mid 70s by the final whistle.

INTO NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge will remain in place, so most of the week looks dry and warm with highs in the 80s each day with more sun than clouds. Towards the end of the week, the models are hinting at a cold front which could bring a few showers, but with limited moisture in place, we do not expect anything to heavy or widespread. By the following weekend (October 16-17th) would could see a big cool down finally.

IN THE TROPICS: An elongated area of low pressure located more than 150 miles off the coast of South Carolina is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms well to the east of the center of circulation. Strong upper-level winds should prevent any significant tropical or subtropical development during the next day or two. By Sunday, however, environmental conditions could briefly become marginally conducive for some subtropical development of the low. By early next week, the low is expected to interact with a frontal boundary, which should end the opportunity for any subtropical or tropical formation. Regardless of development, the low is forecast to meander just offshore the Carolinas for the next few days, occasionally bringing locally heavy rains and gusty winds to eastern portions of the Carolinas through the weekend. Formation chance through 48 hours…low…30 percent.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 102F at Rio Grande Village, TX. The lowest observation was 17F at Marion, MT.

WEATHER ON THIS DATE IN 1982: An unusually early snowstorm hit the northern Black Hills of Wyoming and South Dakota. The storm produced up to 54 inches of snow, and winds as high as 70 mph. The snowfall was very much dependent upon topography. Rapid City, 20 miles away, received just a trace of snow.
