Midday Nowcast: Sun, Clouds and Warm Temperatures

Our Monday is featuring a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the mid 80s. A cold front will be approaching from the west late in the day, and should allow for more clouds by this evening. A few locations, especially in West Alabama, may see a brief shower tonight and/or tomorrow before the front dissipates over the state. Highs again tomorrow will be in the mid 80s.

UNSEASONABLY WARM WEATHER: The weather will be dry Wednesday and Thursday and the sky will be mostly sunny both days with highs in the mid 80s; average highs this time of year for Central Alabama are in the upper 70s. The day Friday will be warm and dry, but a cold front will bring a chance of showers and storms to the state late Friday night and early Saturday. Limited moisture levels means the rain shouldn’t be too heavy or widespread but some locations will see some, while many others stay dry.

FALL AIR RETURNS: The front passes through the state early Saturday with clouds and some showers still possible. By the afternoon, drier and cooler air spills into the state with a fresh north breeze, highs Saturday will be closer to 70°. Sunday will be a cool and dry day with abundant sunshine. Many North/Central Alabama communities will dip into the 40s early Sunday morning, followed by a high in the low 70s.

NEXT WEEK: The week looks generally cool and dry with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s as the fall air and quiet weather pattern will persist.

IN THE TROPICS: 1. A tropical wave located about 350 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands is producing an area of showers and a few thunderstorms. Some slow development is possible during the next day or two while the system moves west-northwestward at about 15 mph toward the Lesser Antilles. Strong upper-level winds are expected to limit further development on Tuesday. Regardless of development, the system could produce locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds across portions of the central and northern Lesser Antilles on Tuesday, and across the Virgin Islands and Leeward Islands on Wednesday. Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent.

2. Shower and thunderstorm activity associated with another tropical wave located over the eastern Caribbean Sea has decreased since yesterday. Environmental conditions are not expected to support development of this system for the next day or two. However, some gradual development is possible beginning on Wednesday when the system nears the southeastern Bahamas. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is possible over portions of the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola during the next couple of days. Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent.
