Midday Nowcast: Tons of Sunshine

It was a cold morning across the area, but with sunshine in full supply, we are seeing highs climb into the mid 50s for most locations this afternoon. However, these temperatures are below average for this time of year as we should be in the lower 60s. The sky remains clear tonight, and it will be another cold one with temperatures ranging from 28-38 degrees across North/Central Alabama.

SUNNY, DRY DAYS: As we transition from November to December this week, the weather could not be any better. High pressure will remain firmly in control our weather for the rest of the week, providing us with some great weather. The days will be sunny, nights will be clear, and each day temperatures will be warmer than the day before. We reach the low 60s tomorrow, and the upper 60s Wednesday. Then, afternoon highs will be in the low 70s Thursday and Friday, ten degrees above average for early December in Alabama.

WEEKEND WEATHER: As we roll into the weekend, the forecast confidence is not great due to model madness, but for now, Saturday looks dry and mild with a mix of sun and clouds. On Sunday, the day will be mostly cloudy with a few scattered showers possible. Rain will be more widespread Sunday night as a surface low passes through the region. Rain amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely over the northern half of the state, with very light amounts over South Alabama. Highs over the weekend will be generally in the 66-70 degree range.

WEATHER ON THIS DATE IN 1896: The mercury plunged to 51 degrees below zero at Havre, MT. It marked the culmination of a two week long cold wave caused by a stagnate high pressure area similar to those over Siberia during the winter. During the month of November temperatures across Montana and the Dakotas averaged 15 to 25 degrees below normal.
