Virginia trip part I – Conference and Mayberry

Due to a problem with flickr or a computer server, my blog post that was supposed to show these pictures yesterday linked to someone else’s photo stream on flickr.com that had some inappropriate pictures in it. I have investigated the problem, but I still have no idea how this occurred, and I want to apologize to anyone who came on this site looking for weather information or my pictures from Mayberry, and saw those pictures instead.

Here are MY pictures (I won’t use flickr again, that’s for sure!).

I am now back from the 34th Int’l Conf. on Radar Meteorology in Williamsburg, Virginia. Some neat stuff there. However, I have to brag on my school…of all the colleges and labs represented, including NCAR, NASA, Univ. of Oklahoma, etc., UAH had the most presentations of any institution there! Our atmospheric science program continues to grow, and the state of Alabama is becoming the center of storm research in the eastern US.

I presented a talk on nighttime waves and thunderstorm development, and a poster on the effect of bays/rivers/mountains/valleys on tornadoes, but there are short papers on both online at Nighttime waves and thunder storms and at Friction and topographic effects on tornadoes.

I mentioned the other day that, on the way back from VA, we stopped in Mt. Airy, NC, hometown of Andy Griffith, and the town that Mayberry on “The Andy Griffith Show” was based on. Some of the attractions in the town are very old and there before the show. There were also a few newer re-creations of things on the show. Below are some pictures from Mt. Airy, NC…enjoy.
