Severe Threat Has Concluded for Today; Six Possible Tornadoes Today

| April 5, 2022 @ 1:09 pm

As of 1 pm, all the rain and thunderstorm activity has pushed across the I-59 corridor, with the heaviest cells within the leading line already moved over into Georgia. The good news is that the severe weather threat now appears to be over for all of North/Central Alabama for the rest of today, but severe storms will continue for a little while longer for the extreme southern and southeastern parts of the state.

While the Tornado Watch doesn’t expire for Barbour and Russell counties until 2 pm this afternoon, I am sure that NWS Birmingham will stick a fork in it as soon as those heavier storms completely move out of Barbour County.

It will take a few more hours for the rest of the rain shield associated with this round of storms to move out of the area, and skies will remain mostly cloudy behind that. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a few more scattered showers form later this afternoon, but the atmosphere will not recover enough for any stronger to severe storms.

There were six possible tornadoes within this system today, and NWS Birmingham already has a survey crew on its way down to Wetumpka. Only one team will be sent out on Wednesday as severe storms will be possible once again during the afternoon and evening hours, and they will need to have enough staff for coverage.
