Alabama Weather Update: More Showers and Storm In Store This Afternoon and Tonight

| April 17, 2022 @ 2:48 pm

Showers and storms are moving through southeastern Alabama at this hour. There are only a few light showers over North Alabama. The sun is trying valiantly to break out behind this morning’s rain area, but the going has been tough. Highs this afternoon will struggle to get out of the 60s over North Alabama, with 70s elsewhere.

The next round of storms that will affect Alabama is building now over southern Arkansas, western Tennessee, and northern Louisiana. This activity will swing southeastward, reaching Alabama later this afternoon and evening. Some of these storms will likely be severe with damaging winds and hail.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for parts of Northeast Texas, northern Louisiana, and extreme southern Arkansas.

The SPC has much of Alabama in at least a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) for severe weather this afternoon and tonight. A slight risk (level 2 of 5) covers Southwest Alabama, southwest of an arc from Livington to Camden to Evergreen to Milton FL to Bayou La Batre.

The cold front that will put an end to the rain will arrive later this evening, reaching the northwest corner of Alabama after 3 a.m. There will be a few showers and storms ahead of the front after midnight, but I don’t think they will be substantial enough to become severe. Lows tonight will be in the 50s North and 60s South.

High-pressure ridging will build in quickly behind the departing shortwave that will be responsible for today and tonight’s rain and storms. Look for clearing skies Monday with a high near 70F, near-total sunshine and upper 60s to lower 70s Tuesday, and a warming trend through the remainder of the week. 80s will be common by Thursday, with highs in the middle 80s next weekend for football
