Midday Nowcast: Quiet Today, but Storms Return Tomorrow

Another day with a mix of sun and clouds in the Alabama sky and rain chances are pretty slim this afternoon; anything that pops-up will be very isolated. Many locations are climbing well into the 80s this afternoon with many spots getting close to 90°. To our west today, more severe storms are ongoing across the ARKLATEX and these will slide east perhaps entering Northwest Alabama late tonight. These storms will be weakening as they do, but still a few could be locally severe with gusty winds and hail. The SPC has an “marginal risk” out for this threat.

RAIN/STORMS RETURN: The storms will weaken in the morning, but as the front moves into the state, and daytime heating increases, we are likely to see storms intensify due to the increasing instability. The SPC has a “slight risk” (level 2/5) for areas east of a line from Fort Payne to Gadsden to Hoover to Thomasville, with a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) for the rest of the state.

Stronger storms tomorrow could produce strong winds and hail; the tornado threat is very low, but not zero. The main window for storms will come from 8AM through 3PM with the storm threat ending as the storms push into Georgia by mid-afternoon. Highs tomorrow will be in close to 80°. Tomorrow evening, behind the front, drier air returns.

MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND: Saturday and Sunday will be dry and pleasant day with a good supply of sunshine both days. Highs will be in the 70s Saturday, followed by low to mid 80s Sunday; lows both morning will be in the 50s.

CRANKING UP THE HEAT: Much of the week will be quiet, although some isolated showers could pop up at times by midweek. It still appears we will see our hottest week of weather so far in 2022, as the upper-ridge builds in across the region, highs likely to be around the 90° mark next week.
