A Warm Alabama Sunday Afternoon; Alex Nearly a Hurricane

| June 5, 2022 @ 12:59 pm

Potential Tropical Cyclone One was a late bloomer, but it is making the most of an abnormally warm Gulf Stream today. The Hurricane Hunters found top winds of 65 mph in the system, just nine mph short of the hurricane-strength threshold. It looks very likely that Alex will pass very near or just north of Bermuda during the day on Monday bringing the island tropical storm conditions from late tonight through Monday. It has about 12 hours to strengthen further but is not expected to become a hurricane.

Across Alabama, skies are partly cloudy and temperatures warm. Selma is already up to 86F. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa are at 84F, Anniston 82F.

There could be an isolated shower or storm over South Central and South Alabama this afternoon, but most of the area will be dry. Highs will bump up against 90 in many locations.

Tonight will be clear and comfortable with lows in the lower and middle 60s.

Tomorrow will be hot, with highs in the lower 90s. There is just a tiny chance of a mainly afternoon or evening thunderstorm.

Rain chances will return Tuesday through Saturday, although the best chances are over North Alabama.
