Alabama NewsCenter — Guide to The World Games 2022 competitions, Part 3: Martial Arts, Precision Sports and Strength Sports

With The World Games 2022 in Birmingham just days away, Alabama NewsCenter is providing snapshots of all the sports that will be played over the games’ 10 days of competitions. Today, we feature Martial Arts, Precision Sports and Strength Sports.

JU-JITSU
Ju-Jitsu is a Japanese martial art and a method of close combat and self-defense. It expresses the philosophy of yielding to an opponent’s force rather than trying to oppose force with force.

KARATE
Karate is a martial art that primarily features punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands and palm-heel strikes.

KICKBOXING
Kickboxing is a combat sport that features kicking and punching. Kickboxing offers one discipline in The World Games: K1 Rules.

MUAYTHAI
Muaythai is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. It is known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins.

SUMO
Sumo is a competitive, full-contact wrestling sport in which a wrestler (rikishi) attempts to force another wrestler out of a 4.55-meter circular ring (dohy?) or into touching the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet.
