Alabama NewsCenter — Monkeypox: what you need to know

On July 15, the Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed the first case of monkeypox found in the state. While the total number of cases across the country remains low – nearly 1,500 cases as of July 14 –physicians at the University of Alabama at Birmingham say there are steps you can take to protect yourself and limit the spread.

“I wouldn’t say it’s time to be worried but rather emphasize the need to be knowledgeable and aware of the symptoms,” said Dr. Jeremey Walker, assistant professor in the UAB Division of Infectious Diseases. “The mortality rate for prior strains has been 3 to 5%, but this current outbreak thankfully appears to be lower.”
