The 24th Annual Sidewalk Film Festival starts this evening and runs through Aug. 28 – and after two years of adapting to COVID-19, organizers hope this year will mark a relative return to normalcy for the event, which brings thousands of attendees to downtown Birmingham each year.

In 2020, the festival had to move away from Birmingham’s historic theater district that had been its home for over two decades, temporarily relocating to the Grand River Drive-In in Leeds. Sidewalk Executive Director Chloe Cook says ticket sales were “dramatically lower” for that year, and in 2021, the festival moved back to downtown Birmingham, although social distancing concerns led organizers to place a 50% cap on ticket sales.

That self-imposed limitation isn’t in place for this year, which Cook says she hopes will “feel more like normal.”
