Midday Nowcast: Some Sun, Clouds, and Scattered Showers

| August 26, 2022 @ 11:09 am

We are seeing a mix of sun and clouds as we head into the afternoon hours and temperatures are in the low to mid 80s. A check of the radar show only a few showers at the midday hours, with most of these southeast of the Birmingham area.

Through the afternoon hours, additional scattered showers and storms will develop across the Alabama landscape. Rain chances the rest of today are in the 50-60%, with the higher chances across South Alabama. As we have seen all week, any showers that develop are prolific rain producers and could lead to areas of isolated flash flooding.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: For the high school games tonight, a few scattered showers will be around, mostly during the first half of the games. It won’t rain at every stadium, but I would take the rain gear just on case. Temperatures will be near 80° at kickoff, falling into the upper 70s during the second half.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Not much change in the forecast for tomorrow and Sunday as scattered showers and storms will remain in the forecast both days. Rain chances will be in the 40-50% range, with most of the activity occurring during the afternoon and evening hours. We expect a partly sunny sky with highs in the upper 80s, to perhaps low 90s in spots, both days.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tomorrow, Jacksonville State will take on Stephen F. Austin at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery (2:30p CT kickoff on ESPN)… the sky will be partly sunny with some risk of a passing shower or storm during the game. Kickoff temperature near 89, falling back into the low 80s by the final whistle.

IN THE TROPICS: A tropical wave located to the west of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions could support some gradual development of this system through early next week while it moves westward across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic at 10 to 15 mph. Formation chance through 5 days…low…30 percent.

Plus, a trough of low pressure located over the eastern Caribbean Sea is producing minimal shower and thunderstorm activity. This system is expected to move westward at about 15 mph during the next several days, and environmental conditions could become more conducive for slow development by early next week when it moves across the central and western Caribbean Sea. Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent.

FINAL WEEK OF AUGUST: Still looks to be a fairly routine last week of August in the weather department; partly sunny days and the chance for scattered showers and storms each day, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs will remain in the upper 80s to lower 90s, which is right around average for later August.

BEACH FORECAST CENTER: Get the latest weather and rip current forecasts for the beaches from Fort Morgan to Panama City on our Beach Forecast Center page. There, you can select the forecast of the region that you are interested in visiting.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 115.9F at Ahwaz, Iran. The lowest observation was -107.3F at Vostok, Antarctica.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 114F at Death Valley, CA. The lowest observation was 34F at Mackay, ID.
