Evening Weather Update

Light rain has moved into West Alabama ahead of the surface wave forming in the Gulf of Mexico. All of this is coming about 6 hours ahead of schedule… but we need to mention here that a few raindrops are definitely possible for tonight’s Hoover-Prattville state championship game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. It will be a cold rain with temperatures initially near 40, dropping into the upper 30s.

No doubt the deeper moisture will remain well to the south, but we still expect the rain to change to light snow over Central Alabama after midnight, with potential for a dusting to one inch. Some of the high terrain spots in Northeast Alabama could see two inches, in places like Mentone, atop Lookout Mountain.

As we have stressed this week…

*This is not expected to be a major winter storm for Alabama, or one that is long lasting. Looks now with the faster arrival time the snow will be mostly out of the state by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow.
*The snow will be generally light
*Accumulations will be light, and where snow does get on the grass, it will melt quickly during the afternoon as sunshine returns
*We do not expect widespread travel problems, but watch for icy spots on bridges and overpasses early tomorrow morning.

Some late reports from the Jackson NWS chat:

*Viewers calling from McComb, “snowing like crazy”
*Report from NWS Lake Charles of 2.5 inches in Silsby, TX…not far from the Southwest LA Borde
*JAN: Winnsboro [Franklin Co, LA] law enforcement reports SNOW of E0.0 INCH at 04:58 PM CST — moderate to heavy snow falling in winnsboro… accumulating on car tops…reported by northeast ambulance service

More updates as the evening rolls along…
