Midday Nowcast: Storms to our West Arrive Tonight

| January 18, 2023 @ 10:54 am

A warm and mainly cloudy day with some scattered showers on the radar. Late this morning we are seeing widespread 60s, and this afternoon, temperatures will surge into the low and mid 70s across Alabama. Late tonight, a band of strong storms will push into Alabama ahead of a cold front.

The SPC maintains a low end, “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms west of a line from Meridian to Gordo to Fayette to Double Springs to Athens in their day one outlook, which is valid through 6AM tomorrow. As of now, the SPC has removed the threat for Alabama tomorrow, but then can change over the next 24 hours.

The line of storms will enter the northwest corner of the state around 11PM tonight and will roll through during the pre-dawn hours with gusty winds. A brief, isolated tornado can’t be totally ruled out, but is very unlikely. There just isn’t any surface based instability and the main dynamic support will be lifting away from the Deep South. Storms will weaken by daybreak, and the will gradually exit East and Southeast Alabama by midday. Drier air flows into the state behind the front tomorrow, expect a clearing sky with highs in the 60s.

DRY FRIDAY, WET WEEKEND: Friday will be a mostly sunny, cooler day with a high in the 50s over North Alabama, with 60s to the south. Then, the next weather system will bring more rain into Alabama over the weekend. Rain will spread northward on Saturday and periods of rain are likely Saturday night and Sunday with highs in the 50s. Some thunder is possible, but there is no risk of severe storms.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be dry Monday, but another disturbance will bring rain back to the state in the Tuesday/Wednesday time frame. Dry air returns Thursday and Friday, and temperatures will be seasonal through the week with highs mostly in the 50s.
