Midday Nowcast: Clouds for Days

| January 30, 2023 @ 10:55 am

Clouds are lingering in the Alabama sky today and there could be a few showers, but these will remain few and far between. There is a big swing in temperatures across the state today with 50s in the Tennessee Valley and 70s along the Gulf Coast. Most of Central Alabama is in the mid 60s this afternoon.

UNSETTLED WX: An active southwesterly flow remains in place tomorrow and Wednesday, meaning more clouds than sun and some scattered light rain at times both days. There is a frontal boundary in place within this flow and it will slowly sink south this week. This will continue to allow for a big difference in temperatures across the state both days. Areas around Muscle Shoals and Florence could very well hold in the upper 30s much of the day tomorrow and Wednesday, while Mobile reaches the low to mid 70s. Most Alabama communities will be in the 50s and 60s.

TRAVEL HEADACHES: Major problems for areas west and northwest of Alabama as winter weather issues develop. An ice storm warning in effect for Memphis along with parts of West Tennessee, North Mississippi, and East Arkansas. Freezing rain is expected to bring significant ice accumulation in these areas, possibly enough for power outages. Freezing rain and snow issues are expected to the west into parts of Texas as well. Again, if your travels take you to these locations, plan ahead.

WET THURSDAY: We are forecasting a good soaking Thursday as the main wave passes through and the front finally pushes off to the south. Rain amounts of 1-3 inches statewide are certainly possible by the time the rain comes to an end late Thursday. Good news, the air will be stable with temperatures in the 50s so no severe storms.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Dry air returns Friday with a clearing sky, and Saturday will feature sunshine in full supply. A disturbance will bring some clouds Sunday along with some risk of light rain. Temperatures over the weekend will be seasonal with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s and 40s.

NEXT WEEK: Monday and Tuesday look rain-free, but rain will will likely return at mid-week on Wednesday. Drier air follows by Thursday and Friday. Still no sign of any bitterly cold, Arctic air through mid-February.
