Strong Storms Pushing into Birmingham Metro, Strong Storms Back in Mississippi as Well

| April 27, 2023 @ 9:31 pm

Strong thunderstorms continue tonight across Central Alabama.

The strongest storm at 9:130 p.m. is passing north and northeast of the Tuscaloosa/Northport area. It has just undergone a cell merger. It will affect western Jefferson County from about Hueytown down to Bessemer and northwestern Shelby County including the Pelham, Helena, Alabaster, and Calera areas over the next 30 minutes to an hour. It is in an area of maximum bulk share and the storm has become a little better organized in the past few minutes. It shows broad rotation. It probably has some small to medium sized hail. Lots of lightning too.

The NWS in Birmingham is handling it with a significant weather advisory for now, warning of 40 mph winds and nickle sized hail.

This storm should weaken as it pushes further east, but we are still watching it closely.

There is another less intense storm along US-82 between Elrod and Gordo. It should follow the first storm passing just north of Tuscaloosa and Northport also.

There is a decent storm south of Cochrane and Aliceville in southern Pickens and northern Greene County.

The NWS in Birmingham says they do not plan on extending the watch eastward.

Back in Northwest Mississippi, a line of strong storms continues pushing eastward. There is a severe thunderstorm warning for areas around Senatobia MS, south of Memphis. These storms appear to be getting a little boost from an increasing low-level jet, and this may allow them to hold their severe potential as they push eastward over the next few hours. Eventually, the loss of low-level warmth will result in decreasing intensity.
