Midday Nowcast: Great Weather Today; Record Highs in Jeopardy the Rest of this Week
WELCOME TO APRIL: A gorgeous start to April across Alabama with tons of sunshine and very comfortable temperatures with afternoon highs surging into the upper 70s and lower 80s across much of Alabama. Tonight will feature increasing clouds with lows in the upper 50s and lower 60s.
TOMORROW-SATURDAY: The forecast the rest of this week may include the word HOT, and that’s no April Fools joke. Heat levels tomorrow through Saturday will climb due to a strong upper ridge building in across the Deep South. Highs through Saturday will surge into the mid and upper 80s across Alabama, and these will be the warmest temperatures so far in 2025. In fact, there could be some 90° temperatures on the maps in a few spots across Alabama on some of these days. Record highs are in jeopardy and here are the current record highs for Birmingham the next four days:
April 2 86 (2012)
April 3 87 (1999)
April 4 88 (1934)
April 5 88 (2010)
If we do reach 90° on one of these days, it won’t be the earliest 90° temperature on record; that happened on March 21, 1907. As far as rainfall, the ridge will keep widespread showers ands storms north and west of Alabama, but a few strong storms could creep into the northwest corner of the state Wednesday night and Thursday night.
A few isolated showers will be possible each day and these days will feature more clouds than sun, but overall the weather will remain mainly dry in Alabama.
BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For April 1st, the average high for Birmingham is 72° and the average low is 48°. The record high is 86° set in 1974, while the record low is 27° set in 1987. We average 0.18” of precipitation on this date and the record value is 3.78” set in 1920.
SUNDAY AND NEXT WEEK: The ridge breaks down on Sunday, allowing showers and thunderstorms to return to Alabama. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has defined a risk of severe storms late Saturday night over the northern and western counties.
Too early to be specific about possible threats, but we should see storms arrive in Alabama Saturday night and continue into Sunday across Alabama. With the clouds and rain, Sunday will be a cooler day with highs in low to mid 70s.
LATE SEASON COLD SNAP: We always caution that this happens and it looks like next week chilly weather returns to Alabama. Highs Monday across North Alabama will likely hold in the 50s, while the rest of the state should see low 60s. Overnight lows for a couple of nights will be in the 30s, and there is a decent chance for some frost and a late season freeze for parts of Alabama. Much of next week looks dry, highs moderate into the 70s, while lows climb back into the mid and upper 40s. Overall another great week of weather to open those windows and allow your house to air out.
WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 112.3F at Ndjamena, Chad. The lowest observation was -99.6F at Concordia, Antarctica.
CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 100F at Faith Ranch, TX. The lowest observation was -6F at Big Bay, MI.
