RECORD HIGH TODAY: Today’s record is 88 degrees set back way in 1919, which was actually before I started doing weather on TV here. We are forecasting a high of 89, so if we reach that it will be the warmest October 11 on record. The air remains dry, and the sky will be mostly sunny. But, to the west, an upper low is swinging through the Southern Plains, and will bring some weather changes to Alabama.

MID-WEEK: SPC has defined a slight risk (their standard risk) of severe weather for much of Mississippi tomorrow due to the upper low creating a decent level of instability. Some storms west of Alabama tomorrow afternoon could produce hail and strong winds, and those showers and storms should move into our state late tomorrow and tomorrow night. Unfortunately the dynamics will be weakening, and the air will be much more stable considering the time of day, so severe weather problems (at least on a widespread basis) are not expected here. But, at least some communities will see a little rain in the form of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Seems like the main window will come from about 4:00 p.m. tomorrow until 4:00 a.m. Wednesday. The NAM is printing only 0.07″ of rain for Birmingham, while the GFS is a little wetter with 0.20″. It won’t be really beneficial, and some spots could miss the rain completely due to the scattered nature of the showers. Then, Wednesday looks dry and a little cooler with a high in the low 80s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Much cooler air moves into our state on these days as an upper trough over the east sharpens up. The high will drop into the mid70s, with early morning lows in the 41 to 46 degree range. No rain with very dry air in place.

WEEKEND PEEK: A delightful weekend is ahead, with sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights. Highs on Saturday and Sunday will remain in the 70s, with morning lows generally in the 40s. Once again, there will be no chance of rain for high school and college football games in the state.

HEY HEY PAULA: A disturbance on the coast of Central America has a decent chance of becoming Tropical Storm Paula in coming days. There won’t be much movement… perhaps a drift to the north with weak steering currents. One way or another, this one should ultimately turn to the northeast, not impacting the Central Gulf Coast. South Florida might have an issue, however… see the Weather Xtreme video for details.

PRE-HALLOWEEN FREEZE? Out in the land of voodoo the GFS is advertising a big change to colder weather in the October 24-27 time frame… see the Weather Xtreme video for details.
