Severe weather analysis – 710 pm

(Dewpoint)

Right now, a cold front is approaching the MS River, and warm air has moved across AL.  It is 68 degrees in BHM…more like an October evening than December.  But the humid air required for widespread severe wx, is still concentrated in southern MS and Louisiana.   There is large wind shear tonight, so that  storms will rotate, and tornadoes have been reported in MS.

Right now, the most dangerous storms are approaching Meridian, MS and surrounding areas. See Bill’s post below.

Storms will increase over AL tonight, as the cold front moves in.  I am blogging from the Warrior River tonight, and can already see brilliant lightning off to my west in Fayette/Lamar counties.  The storms over north and central AL should mainly be elevated this evening (not severe), as the surface dewpoints are only in the 50s.  But, with strong south winds overnight, the moist air will move up into south and maybe central Alabama.  It’s hard to tell just how far north the moist air will make it…best guess now is that the biggest threat for tornadoes will be SW of a line from Fayette to BHM to Auburn.  The main line of storms will come through BHM early morning, with very heavy rainfall and possibly damaging winds.

This is a developing situation.  Please keep an eye on the weather tonight and tomorrow morning.
