Trouble Getting Closer

A short line of intense thunderstorms in East/Central Mississippi has prompted several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and at least one Tornado Warning. It is getting close enough to West/Central Alabama to where we could see some Alabama warnings in the next hour or so.

Remember, the original Tornado Watch continues until 11:00 tonight for a number of counties in NW and West Alabama as far east as Cullman, Walker and Tuscaloosa. That watch may need to be redesigned or a new watch issued later this evening.

We are also very concerned about a long line of thunderstorms from West Tennessee down across NW Mississippi into North Louisiana. This line of storms is along a cold front. It may be midnight or later when these storms reach Central Alabama.

It remains to be seen just how strong they will be at that time. It could be that they may pose a damaging wind threat moreso than tornadoes at that late time of the night.

From years and years being in weather, we all learned a long time ago that there are surprises in every severe weather episode. To address some questions asked in the comment section of the Blog this evening, yes, it will be very advisable to keep your weather radio handy and mobile homes will not be the safest place to be. This is especially true over North and West Alabama.

We will be up all night, so keep checking the Blog as we ride this out together.
