Breezy and Chilly Today

The rain has been swept out of Alabama, but not before many locations got between 2 and 3 inches of rain. This sure has helped put a BIG dent in our deficit. The Birmingham Airport showed a deficit of about 3.25 inches yesterday but today that deficit has been cut to 1 and a third inches. And with more wet weather coming our way in the days ahead, perhaps we’ll get back on track.

For today it will be breezy as cold air advection takes hold with highs only into the lower 50s. And tomorrow morning we are going to be flirting with the freezing mark with some of those colder locations dipping into the 20s. Our upper flow will go zonal for Monday as a new upper low begins to kick out of the southern Rockies. Tuesday is going to be a transition day as that upper low gets closer. I think Tuesday will be dry with much of the next wet period coming Wednesday.

There is also some risk of severe weather on Wednesday. The SPC did not outline a specific area, but they did focus on the potential for the lower Mississippi River Valley for Wednesday. We’ll be keeping an eye on how this evolves as we get closer to that event. Again, rainfall will be in the 1 inch range, so that will help subtract from the current deficit.

The GFS is forecasting a deepening of the trough on Thursday which could usher in some additional cold air. The deepening seems to be a little over done, so this could be showing much colder than it will actually be. I want to see how future model runs handle this, and I would not be surprised to see it moderated just a bit. But it is a reminder that winter is still with us.

Once that system slips by on Friday, we come under weak ridging for the weekend which should allow us to warm up with highs back into the 60s.

Looking much further ahead, the flow remains active with another round of wet weather around 15th and the 17th. As we get toward the 20th the focus shifts west with a deep closed low over the four corners area which would provide a ridge for us with some warm weather.
