SUNNY DAYS: March is usually our wettest month the year in Alabama… so far this month we have measured 7.01″ at the Birmingham Airport. But, we are about to get a nice seven day break from rain as ridging aloft builds into the region from the Gulf of Mexico. Today will be bright and sunny with a high in the 60s, but the real warm-up begins tomorrow as temperatures soar into the upper 70s. Then, Friday through Sunday, we expect some of the warmest weather so far this year with daily highs around 80 along with a partly to mostly sunny sky each day. Some places could easily reach the low 80s along the way, giving us a real preview of summer.

HEADED TO THE BEACH? Beautiful weather through the weekend with sunny days and clear nights. Along the immediate coast the high will be in the mid to upper 60s, but inland areas will be close to 80 by Friday and the weekend. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 64 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: We stay warm and dry Monday and Tuesday… then a cold front will pass through on Wednesday with a chance of showers and storms. For now it looks like the main upper support will pass well to the north thanks to the ridge, so severe weather or heavy rain doesn’t look especially likely. Cooler air will follow on Thursday and Friday, but the 00Z GFS has backed off on the strength of the eastern upper trough, keeping us above freezing on these mornings.

LONG RANGE: The forecast spike of the NAO into negative territory could mean a setup for a late season cold snap at some point in early April, but no way to be specific. Just keep that in mind… see the Weather Xtreme video for more details on long range ideas.
