THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures are generally about 5 degrees “cooler” than yesterday across Alabama at 3:00… Tuscaloosa was at 99; Birmingham reports 95. Only isolated showers are on radar, generally south of U.S. 82.

CHANGES AHEAD: I am sure most readers will welcome some change in this generally hot, dry weather. A very dynamic upper trough is moving out of the Rockies and into the Great Plains this evening, and that will serve to weaken the heat ridge, allowing more clouds, more showers and storms, and lower heat levels in coming days.

We will introduce the chance of afternoon showers and storms tomorrow with a high in the low 90s. Then, Wednesday through Friday, the sky will be occasionally cloudy with scattered to numerous showers and storms on a daily basis. Sure looks like we have a good chance of staying below 90 on all three of these days, with highs mostly in the 86-89 degree range. Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely, with heavier amounts in a few spots. Of course, in summer the rain distribution is not very even, but after three days I believe most neighborhoods will have at least a few good downpours.

Severe weather is not likely, although a stronger storm could produce some hail or gusty winds.

OUR WEEKEND: The unsettled pattern will continue, with a good chance of a few showers and storms both days along with a high around 90 degrees. The rain won’t be continuous, and the sun should be out at times, but just keep in mind rain delays are likely if you have something planned outdoors.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Most global models show the most intense heat in the nation well to the west of here for the last week of June and the first week of July… so temperatures here should be near average values for summer, with some daily risk of scattered showers and storms. We note the 12Z GFS tries to develop a tropical low near the Yucatan Peninsula in a week or so, with a general motion toward the Central Gulf Coast. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas and details.
