I think we won’t have too many dull moments in the weather office for a while. Looks like the potential for two severe weather events during the next 8 days… one on Friday, and perhaps another one Monday night or Tuesday of next week.

MID-WEEK: The weather stays quiet tomorrow and Wednesday with a warming trend. Temperatures are warmer than forecast today due to the quick clearing this morning, and a true Arctic tap we expected a few days ago. Nobody complaining about that; and we will warm into the upper 50s tomorrow, and into the mid 60s on Wednesday. Moisture levels will increase by Wednesday night, and a few showers could show up by then. Showers will be more likely on Thursday with a wide open Gulf of Mexico.

FRIDAY: A fairly strong upper trough will impact Alabama on Friday; that combined with a fairly impressive wind structure at the surface and aloft will bring the chance of strong to severe thunderstorms to Alabama. SPC has the southern half of the state in a severe weather risk for now, but at first glance this system will have much better instability to work with statewide; surface temperatures should rise into the 70s with dewpoints well up into the 60s. They will probably be pulling that severe weather risk northward in coming days if the models continue to trend in this direction.

At least one inch of rain is likely Thursday and Friday; some spots could see over two inches; especially over the southern half of the state.

OUR WEEKEND: The GFS continues the trend toward a dry forecast for Saturday and Sunday, and I think we will have to trend in that direction as well. The model is suggesting highs in the 50s on Saturday, and 60s again Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Another dynamic system is due in here early next week with a chance of strong to severe storms by Monday night or Tuesday. We need to get Friday’s system out of here before we can really focus on that one.
