Updating and Recapping…

Turned out to be a busy afternoon after all across Alabama with severe weather…we had some inklings starting yesterday to that effect and sure enough…it happened.

First…a review of ongoing events out of our area…the tornado warning for Macon County has been cancelled. The strongest storms are in Lee County now near Opelika. There is a severe thunderstorm warning for Coffee County.

Moderate rain is occurring across the far eastern counties from DeKlab County southward to Chambers County. Lighter rain is showing up back as far west as St. Clair, eastern Shelby and Coosa Counties. There are a few light showers in the Birmingham area, extending down into Bibb, Perry, Dallas and over into Hale County.

West of I-59, the rain will mostly be over for the night. Skies are cloudy back to the Mississippi River. This clearing line should reach western Alabama during the pre-dawn hours and the Birmingham area shortly after sunrise. Low pressure is over Central Tennessee, east of Nashville with a cold front trailing though eastern Alabama. A secondary cold front is back to the west over Arkansas. We will see it in here tomorrow night.

Monday should feature quickly clearing skies, with a good deal of sunshine. Temperatures will rise into the middle 50s. Tomorrow night will be mostly clear with lighter winds and the mercury will drop to near freezing in most locales. The reinforcing shot of cold air will sink readings into the middle to upper 20s Monday night.

Damage was reported from a supercell storm just ahead of the squall line across Montgomery, Elmore, Tallapoosa and Chambers Counties…
…3:26 p.m. CST…Local police reported possible tornado in the area of Sheraton Heights Apartments two miles NW of Montgomery.
,,,3:43 p.m. CST…report received of tornado touch down in Madison Park (Montgomery) which is at U.S. Highway 231 and Northern Boulevard. It is one mile due north of Gunter AF Station.
…4:10 p.m. CST…10 S Dadeville [Tallapoosa Co]…house destroyed on Prospect Road…just west of Highway 49. roof damage on another house in the same area…on Sandy drive. possible tornado.
…4:19 p.m. CST…report was received of possible tornado touch down reported in eastern Elmore County. damage and possible injuries near HWY 170 and/or HWY 14… 5 car pile up due to possible tornado…road unknown
…Blog reader Sammy Reeves reports damage in the Union community of Tallapoosa County near Lake Martin.
Other events…
…Southside [Etowah Co] law enforcement reports wind damage at 03:17 PM CST — tree fell on a house on Valecross Way.
…Ham radio report of 57 mph wind gust in Graysville when storms entered Jefferson County.
…We observed 45 mph wind gust atop Daniel Building in downtown Birmingham when the storms arrived.

Rainfall amounts were fairly generous. The Tennessee Valley was the exception, where gernally amounts were a quarter of an inch or less. The rest of North and Central Alabama picked up one half to one and one half inches. The best amounts were across South Central Alabama from Wilcox through Lowndes, Montgomery, Elmore, Tallapoosa and into Chambers Counties where 1.5 to over 3 inches fell. There might have been as much as 4.5 inches between Camden and Pine Hill in Wilcox County.

I picked up 0.91 in Trussville. The Airport picked up 0.71, the NWS Calera 0.73. Montgomery picked up 1.73 inches.
