Look at the Overnight Severe Weather Threat

Severe thunderstorms are still possible overnight and Saturday morning as storms fire ahead of an approaching upper trough and surface low over North Texas.

That low has a minimum pressure of about 995 millibars. It is west of Dallas. It will move ENE overnight. The stationary front that has been draped over North Central Alabama is retreating north as a warm front.

A cluster for severe storms has formed over Southeast Arkansas, Northeast Louisiana into western Mississippi where a tornado watch is in effect until 3 a.m. Several warnings are in effect now into the Mississippi Delta A funnel cloud was sighted a couple of hours ago near Ruston, LA along I-20. Golfball sized hail was reported about 10:22 near Greenville MS.

Surface based CAPEs of up to 500 j/kg are extending over southern Alabama, southern Mississippi and up into southern Arkansas. Dewpoints are low however, back over Mississippi, only in the lower and middle 50s.

The storms should gradually go from being surface based (more severe) to elevated as they encounter more stable air over Mississippi and Alabama. The main threat should go from damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes to more of a damaging winds/hail event.

They should arrive in West Alabama around 3 a.m. They should make I-65 around 5 a.m. to 6 a.m.

THERE WILL BE A THREAT OF DAMAGING WINDS WITH THESE STORMS OVERNIGHT! Please turn on your weather radio before going to bed in the alert mode. Otherwise, get up and check the conditions periodically through the night. If severe storms approach your area, go immediately through your severe weather safety plan.

The line may be well east of us by mid-morning, into Georgia, where additional severe weather is expected later in the day into the overnight.

SO PAY ATTENTION TO WEATHER INFORMATION THROUGH THE EARLY MORNING HOURS…EXPECT A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH OVERNIGHT…

Read down to learn about some scary moments at the SEC Basketball Championship in Atlanta when a possible tornado struck the Dome, CNN and the Omni hotel. Winds have been blown out and some people were injured. No major injuries were repored in the Dome.

Miraculously, Alabama tied the game just a few minutes before the storm struck, sending it into overtime and perhaps sparing a tragedy as fans would have been leaving the building.

The final game of the night has been postponed. I am sure engineers will be checking the stability of the roof overnight.

J.B. and I will have hourly updates on the progress of the system until we see the whites of its eyes on the Mississippi border. Then we will have even more frequent updates.
