DRIER AIR MOVING IN: We note the dew point has dropped to 58 degrees up at Muscle Shoals early this morning (it is still 67 at Birmingham)… and that drier air will drop southward today, meaning most of North and Central Alabama will be rain-free. Keep in mind drier air heats effectively, so the day will be warmer with a high around 90, but the humidity levels will be lower, making that 90 degree high rather comfortable for a June day in Alabama. Any scattered showers or storms this afternoon should be confined to the southern third of the state.

REST OF THE WEEK AND THE WEEKEND: A nice, calm, benign weather pattern is likely… no derecho, severe weather, or anything out of the ordinary is expected. Partly sunny days, fair nights, and only isolated showers. The chance of any one spot getting wet each afternoon (at least on our end of the state) is only in the 10 to 15 percent range, and barely worth mentioning in the forecast.

The hottest day should come tomorrow with a high in the low 90s; the high will back down into the 85 to 88 degree range over the weekend as the low level flow turns easterly.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of the week looks calm with only a small risk of a shower each day; temperatures will remain near seasonal averages with a high in the upper 80s.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Very routine June weather is expected for the Gulf Coast region from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the weekend. About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day, with a few scattered showers and thunderstorms around. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab late last night was 82 degrees.

TROPICAL UPDATE: The Atlantic basin is rather quiet and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend. We do note some of the medium range models are hinting at some type of development in the Gulf of Mexico in about 10 days or so, but it remains to be seen if that will actually happen. Early season systems rarely become major hurricanes; the main risk is from heavy rain and flooding.
