10 PM Update

| December 25, 2012 @ 10:03 pm

The main severe weather threats for Central Alabama are winding down. There is still widespread showers and thunderstorms ongoing. Low pressure is lifting north across west Alabama and is actually causing additional convection to develop from Tuscaloosa up towards Cullman, with some reports of hails associated with these storms. Our part of the state dodged a bullet as far as severe weather as the storm system moved in quicker than the warm front could lift. The warm front struggled to pass the Meridian, MS area. Heavy rains and some tree damage has been reported across West Alabama.

A check of the radar shows most of the activity is east of Interstate 65, minus the convection associated with the low itself. Showers and storms are in Walker and Lamar Counties. Currently, there are still a few warnings for our area, mostly in the southern counties of our coverage area.

Cold front will be sweeping across state tonight and temperatures will continue to drop. We may even see some rain mixing with snow or sleet during the early morning hours as cold air will be settling in across the Southeast. Wednesday will be a very cold and blustery day. Sunshine will be hard to come by and the north winds will make it feel much colder.

Today’s event was a very dangerous situation. There were some fatalities reported off to our west and numerous tornadoes reported on the ground. Damage has been reported from Texas into Alabama. Mobile had a large tornado move through the portion of town known as Midtown where it damaged numerous businesses, a high school and homes in the area. Luckily no injuries were reported at the time, but debris was reported to be blocking many road as well as power outages throughout the city.
