What a great day for Alabama… lots of sunshine, a deep blue sky, excellent visibility, and low humidity. Not many more of these before the hot summer gets here. We should dip into the upper 40s again early tomorrow before a warm-up begins tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow will be dry as well.

WET WEATHER BY WEDNESDAY: We will bring back a chance of showers and thunderstorms by Wednesday as an upper trough slowly approaches from the Southwest U.S. That trough will send occasional ripples of energy over Alabama through Friday, and the latter half of the week looks pretty wet with periods of showers and storms. For now, it looks like the best chance of severe weather will be on Thursday; SPC has much of Alabama in a severe weather risk Thursday. By Friday, SPC shifts the risk down into South Alabama, generally south of Montgomery.

The biggest problem later this week could actually be from flash flooding. Looks like we can expect rain totals of 2 to 3 inches Wednesday through Friday, with isolated amounts of four inches. The ground is now saturated in many parts of the state following the weekend storms.

THE WEEKEND: The 00Z GFS shows the upper trough actually passing through here on Saturday, with a continued risk of showers, but that run is an outlier; most of the other runs, along with the ECMWF, suggest Saturday will be a dry day. One way or another Sunday looks dry and pleasant.

Lets get the 12Z GFS run in the house and we will be more specific about the severe weather threat on Thursday, and the weekend forecast.

LAND OF VOODOO: The 00Z GFS shows a good rain/storm event around May 24, followed by a summer look by May 27 as the main westerlies go way up north, toward the Canadian border.
