FEELS GOOD: Mid-afternoon temperatures across Alabama include 78 at Muscle Shoals, 77 at Tuscaloosa and Alexander City, and 75 in Birmingham and Anniston. Easily the warmest day so far this year, and if you like the weather today, you should love the weekend.

We will enjoy highs up in the mid 70s both tomorrow and Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds both days. Clouds will be a bit thicker Sunday, but the sun should still get through at times.

STRONG STORMS EARLY NEXT WEEK: SPC has introduced a severe weather risk for about the northern third of Alabama up through Middle Tennessee and Kentucky Monday; a strong short wave will pass north of the state, and the air becomes very unstable during the day with surface temperatures climbing into the upper 70s, and surface dewpoints into the mid 60s. Surface based CAPE values of over 1,500 k/kg and lifted index values below -5 develop, and we will continue the chance of showers and strong storms Monday afternoon and Monday night.

Thankfully the main upper support remains well to the north, and bulk shear values are not extremely high, but clearly we will have the risk of a few strong to severe storms around here, and we will keep an eye on conditions over the weekend. Rain amounts of around one-half inch are likely.

The sky becomes sunny on Tuesday, but we turn cooler with a high in the upper 50s. Dry weather continues Wednesday into most of the day Thursday, but showers and storms should return late in the week on Friday with another storm system approaching from the west.

COLD SNAP BEFORE MARCH ENDS: Global models continue to point toward a cold period for Alabama and the Deep South in the March 24-28 time frame; would not be surprised if we have multiple mornings with sub-freezing temperatures. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

AT THE BEACH: The weekend will be dry on the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores… a few showers are possible late Monday or Monday night, otherwise dry weather continues through much of next week. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the 60s, with 70s just a few miles inland. The ocean water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a cool 60 degrees… that will limit the afternoon temperatures on the immediate coast.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
