RADAR CHECK: As noted in the post below, warmer air aloft has kept a lid on showers and storms, generally speaking, so far today. We see just a few isolated showers as of 3:45, with temperatures mostly in the 81-85 degree range. With colder air aloft slipping through North Alabama this evening, and a little more surface heating, storms could blow up and grow stronger in scattered pockets over the next few hours, and SPC maintains their standard “slight risk” of severe weather for the northern third of Alabama through the evening hours.

Any showers and storms that do develop will die down later tonight once the sun goes down.

TOMORROW: No real change for Alabama tomorrow… warm and muggy with a mix of sun and clouds and a high in the mid 80s. A few showers or storms could pop up during the peak of the daytime heating, but they will be pretty isolated due to warm air aloft.

To the west, a “moderate risk” of severe weather remains in place over parts of Oklahoma, with a “slight risk” surrounding that from the Texas Hill County to near Chicago. A few significant tornadoes are possible tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow night, especially in the moderate risk area as a major upper trough moves out of the Rockies.

THURSDAY: The main severe weather risk runs from near Houston to Detroit… higher severe weather probabilities are up for cities like Little Rock and Memphis. But, here in Alabama, the day looks warm and mostly dry with a high in the low to mid 80s. Warm air aloft should keep any showers Thursday few and far between.

SEVERE STORMS EARLY FRIDAY FOR ALABAMA? Not much change in the overall thinking… a band of strong to severe storms will pass through our state early Friday ahead of a cold front. The storms should enter Northwest Alabama around 3:00 a.m… then passing out of the state by 11:00 a.m. The main surface low with the system will be far to the north over Michigan, so the primary threat will come from strong, perhaps damaging straight line winds. We note the instability values are a little higher on the 12Z runs, and with sufficient shear an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.

Friday will be cooler in the wake of the storms with a high between 67 and 70 degrees.

SUNNY WEEKEND: The weekend looks great… lots of sun with a high in the upper 60s Saturday, and low to mid 70s Sunday. Early mornings will be cool with low to mid 40s. Some of the normally colder places across North Alabama could reach the mid to upper 30s early Saturday.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS shows the next chance of showers and storms coming Wednesday morning of next week with a cold front… see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
