Mostly Dry Across Alabama Today

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

A DRY DAY FOR A CHANGE: Understand we are not saying the chance of rain is zero today, but any showers this afternoon should be few and far between thanks to an upper high slipping in here from the north. The warmer air aloft should keep a lid on developing showers, and we expect a good supply of sunshine. The high this afternoon will be close to 90 degrees; if by chance we do see 90 today, it will be only the second time this month we have reached the 90 degree mark as our “cool” July continues. The average high so far is only 84 degrees.

REST OF THE WEEK: The upper high to the north breaks down pretty quickly, so we will have a return to the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, beginning tomorrow afternoon. Each day will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with a high in the 88 to 91 degree range. As usual, the best chance of showers will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but a rogue morning or late night shower or storm can’t be totally ruled out.

OUR WEEKEND: Not much change. A moist airmass sticks around, and scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain possible Saturday and Sunday. The sun will be out at times, and highs will range from 86 to 89 degrees. The same weather can be expected early next week; the 00Z GFS tries to bring drier down into extreme North Alabama Monday, but for now we will discount that solution. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Nothing out of the ordinary; about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily through the weekend with the usual risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 82 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode recorded last night. Great to have Ginger Zee of ABC News on with us.
